July 25, 2017: Keynote Speakers for 2018 SXSW Announced, BBC to Host New Music Festival, Justin Bieber Cancels Rest of World Tour

1. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS FOR 2018 SXSW ANNOUNCED: On Monday, organizers of the South by Southwest Conference & Festivals announced that Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, psychotherapist Esther Perel, and technology entrepreneur William Hurley will serve as keynote speakers at the 2018 event, which will take place from March 9 to 18 in Austin. The Hollywood Reporter: “‘We are overjoyed to invite Barry Jenkins back to SXSW as a film keynote having presented the world premiere of his first feature, Medicine for Melancholy, in 2008,’ Janet Pierson, director of film, said. ‘Moonlight is a magnificent piece of work, transcendent, and made on his own terms. We couldn’t be happier for his success and to have this remarkable artist with such a generous soul return to SXSW.’” http://bit.ly/2eJ8fBH

2. BBC TO HOST NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL: The Glastonbury Festival, a five-day music festival that takes place near Somerset, England, usually takes a “fallow year" every five or six years, in an effort to prevent land damage. 2018 is one of those years. So to fill the fest void, the BBC recently announced plans to host a new event called the Biggest Weekend. It will be a four-day festival that will take place in May across four sites in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. BBC News: “Bob Shennan, director of BBC radio and music, said the corporation ‘has a strong history of bringing the nation together for some special moments, and this is the biggest single music event ever attempted by the BBC. 3. JUSTIN BIEBER CANCELS REST OF WORLD TOUR: On Monday, the singer canceled the remaining dates of his Purpose World Tour, announcing the news via a statement on his website. No specific reason was given. The remaining tour stops included Hong Kong, Tokyo, the Philippines, and Singapore, concluding in October. Rolling Stone: “‘Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts,’ the statement reads. ‘Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across six continents during this run. However, after careful consideration, he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.’” http://rol.st/2uRbEot

ATLANTIC CITY:  Chris Harrison will return as host of the 2018 Miss America Competition. The event will air live on ABC from Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on September 10.

BOSTON:  Aquitaine Bar à Vin Bistrot’s sister location in Chestnut Hill is currently closed for a renovation project, with plans to re-open in the fall.

LOS ANGELES:  The Television Academy has announced that “Golden Grandeur” will be the theme for this year’s Emmy-related balls: the Creative Arts Balls (set for September 9 and 10) as well as the Governors Ball (September 17). Cheryl Cecchetto and Sequoia Productions are planning the events for the 20th consecutive year, and will use architectural shapes in monochromatic gold for decor. Patina Catering will provide a three-course menu.

Alzheimer's Greater Los Angeles will hold its annual Visionary Women's Awards luncheon at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades on November 9.

MONTREAL:  Startup Fashion Week will expand to Montreal September 13 through 15; the event began in Toronto three years ago. The Montreal events will include a media launch and opening party, a business of fashion conference, and a runway show. 

NEW YORK:  Goose Island Beer Company is bringing its Migration Week celebration to New York with a series of events, starting July 26 through July 30. The tasting events—which include dinners, parties, and volunteer events with local chefs, charities, and businesses—are planned to help guests get acquainted with the Chicago beer.  

The New Museum’s fourth edition of IdeasCity New York will take place September 16 at Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Chrystie Street. The free, public event, with the theme of “100 Actions for the Future City,” will feature artist talks, initiatives by local organizations, performances, workshops, and a panel of mayors from around the country.

SAN DIEGO:  Fairmont Grand Del Mar has appointed Amy Fuller to the position of public relations manager at the 249-room property in Northern San Diego.

TORONTO:  The Lole Yoga White Tour returns to Exhibition Place on July 27 for a one-night yoga event, where guests dress in white. The event starts at 6 p.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C.:  InterContinental Washington, D.C.—the Wharf, a soon-to-open 278-room waterfront luxury hotel, has appointed Simon Antoine general manager. He brings more than 30 years of experience to the position, including two decades with InterCon, and most recently served as general manager of InterContinental New York Times Square. The hotel will sit in the area south of the National Mall, which until now has been left relatively undeveloped.
