July 25, 2013: AOL Launches New Kind of Upfront, Chipotle Fakes a Twitter Hack, Guess Founders Plan L.A. Museum

1. AOL LAUNCHES NEW KIND OF UPFRONT: AOL will host what C.E.O. Tim Armstrong calls an upfront for programmatic advertising—an automated process for buying ads in real time—September 23, the first day of Advertising Week in New York. TechCrunch: "It sounds like the event’s goals, at least for this year, revolve as much around promotion and education as they do around making big deals. [AOL executives] repeatedly compared their aspirations for the Programmatic Upfront to the Digital Content NewFronts, which over the past few years have become an important industry event." http://tcrn.ch/18Ey4ss

2. CHIPOTLE FAKES TWITTER HACK FOR PUBLICITY: It turns out Chipotle staged its own Twitter hack to generate publicity for its 20th anniversary. After observers noted a series of bizarre tweets coming from the burrito giant—an example: "Please Twitter end Twitter"—many speculated its feed had been hacked. But executives confessed the marketing stunt, and also noted that it worked. Mashable: "According to [the company] Chipotle's Twitter account added more than 4,000 followers the day of the 'hack,' compared to its normal rate of adding about 250 followers a day. The supposedly hacked tweets, which have not been deleted, were retweeted about 12,000 times. By comparison, Chipotle's Twitter account usually sees about 75 retweets per day. http://on.mash.to/1aKwB13

3. GUESS FOUNDERS TO OPEN PRIVATE MUSEUM IN FORMER EVENT SPACE: The founders of Guess, the fashion brand, have plans to turn a former Masonic Temple in Los Angeles into a private art museum. The temple had served as a private event space but faced complaints from neighbors, The four-story, 90,000-square-foot building was designed by Millard Sheets, who also created the iconic "Touchdown Jesus" mural at the University of Notre Dame. Los Angeles Times: "The imposing marble-clad edifice, which has seen little use since 1994, will undergo a major renovation to house the Marcianos' contemporary art collections. It will be operated for the most part as a private property, with occasional exhibitions open to the public." http://lat.ms/16d0KTG
