New White House Social Secretary Julianna Smoot Takes On Easter Egg Roll, State Dinner

Newly inducted White House Social Secretary Julianna Smoot oversaw her first major event since taking on the position last month, helming Monday's Easter Egg Roll. Some 30,000 guests from all 50 states—a White House first—attended the event, this year dubbed "Ready, Set, Go!" to align with the First Lady's "Let's Move!" initiative to address childhood obesity.

New facets to this year's event included exercise-inducing activities like football, basketball, tennis, golf, softball, and an obstacle course, as well as a station where N.F.L. players taught kids how to catch and throw. Local chefs José Andrés, Robert Wiedmaier, and others prepared healthy meals at the "Play With Your Food" station, while J.K. Rowling, Reese Witherspoon, Apolo Ohno, and Elmo read aloud at the "Storytime Stage." Likely to incite excitement from tweens everywhere was the Justin Bieber performance on the "Rock 'n' Egg Roll Stage," where he was followed by Sara Bareilles and the cast of Glee.

The event was extended this year from 7:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. (last year's Egg Roll ran from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in order allow each shift of 6,000 attendees two full hours on the South Lawn. A total of 14,500 eggs were used throughout the day, with an additional 4,500 at the egg-dying station.

All eyes will once again be on Smoot next month, when she's charged with producing President Obama's second state dinner, on May 19 for Mexican President Felipe Calderón and his wife, Margarita Zavala.
