The Saguaro: Colorful Palm Springs Hotel With Sunny Meeting Space and Latin Fare

Alesandra Dubin
April 5, 2012

In time for Goldenvoice's big Coachella festival kicking off on April 13, the Coachella Valley has a new hotel property that will draw big festival crowds—not to mention KCRW's weekend-long party. The Saguaro Palm Springs, most distinguished by its bold, rainbow-colored façade, opened in February. The 245-room hotel with 16 suites is located at the corner of Sunrise and East Palm Canyon Drive, and was designed to reflect the vibrant hues of the Southwest. It's the second in an expanding collection of Saguaro properties managed by Joie de Vivre Hotels, following the opening of the Saguaro Scottsdale in November.

The palette comes from architects Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat, of New York-based Stamberg Aferiat Architecture, who have infused the property with colors meant to reflect the indigenous flowers of the Colorado Desert. The three-story structure, originally constructed in 1977, has a pool located within a central courtyard. Rooms have work desks and iPod/iPad connectivity. There's a 24-hour fitness center, two whirlpools, shuttle service to the airport, and a spa with a citrus-based product line unique to the Coachella Valley. Bonus: It's a pet-friendly property.

For meetings and events, there is 7,500 square feet of flexible indoor-outdoor space on property, including poolside event venues. The Sago Palm Ballroom has room for 300 people in 3,000 square feet, with ample natural lighting, and a pool courtyard view. The sunny Agave Ballroom has mountain views in 2,700 square feet and the capacity for 275. The California Poppy space, suitable for breakout or boardroom layouts, has 700 square feet of space that holds 75 people. The 400-square-foot Brittlebush has room for 40, and works in a boardroom setup or for intimate group discussions.

The Saguaro offers three distinct dining venues, all managed by chef Jose Garces. Tinto is a Basque tapas restaurant offering a variety of Spanish small plates and an extensive selection of wines, sangrias, and ciders. El Jefe’s Tequila Bar offers a menu of 100 tequila and Joses’ tacos and Mexican small plates. The Cabana Pool Bar offers fresh fruit cocktails, champagnes, and light fare.

At Tinto, chef Jose Garces focuses on small plates found in traditional tapas bars in northwestern Spain called pintxos. The restaurant's look includes custom-crafted wooden wine racks, black and brown highlighted with lavender upholstered banquettes, wood block tables and chairs, and considerable natural night from glass doors that overlook the patio and pool. Signature dishes include cheese and charcuterie selections typical of the Basque region and an array of traditional tapas.

El Jefe's culinary inspiration comes from the diverse street food of Mexico. Dishes include guacamole with mashed avocado, jalapeño, cotija cheese, and house-made tortilla chips; and red snapper ceviche with green olive, red fresno chiles, and tomato-lime vinaigrette. There's a tequila list with 100 varieties.
