2023 BizBash 40 Under 40: Myeeka Ferguson

Myeeka Ferguson is the 35-year-old founder of full-service creative agency Tag Team Entertainment. She’s based in Houston.

What my day-to-day looks like:
A normal weekday for me starts around 10 a.m. After repeating a few affirmations in my head to jumpstart my energy for the day, I have my first cup of coffee, breakfast, and I try hard not to check my emails.

From there, my day has officially begun. Honestly, in this industry, as much as you can try to keep the same midday structure, it's hard—especially when working with all types of clients and projects. From office work to meetings with clients and your team to prepping, setting up, and planning, there is really no set order.

My career journey:
I actually started Tag Team as a publicity company, and about a year into it and having to do a few publicity-focused events, I realized I didn't really want to be a publicist for the simple reason that I liked the experience side of things more. I still wanted to connect people, but in a different way. From there, I changed Tag Team Publicity to Tag Team Entertainment. Three years later, I quit my corporate job in the medical field and took it on full time.

My greatest career accomplishment:
Quitting corporate work and becoming a full-time entrepreneur has to be my biggest career accomplishment. I still think back today and wonder how I made the leap.2023 BizBash 40 Under 40: Myeeka Ferguson"My most memorable event would have to be The Project Fashion Show 2016," Ferguson said, attributing the success to the "multi-sensory" aspect of the experience.Photo: Courtesy of Myeeka Ferguson

My leadership style:
Mentorship and building plays a huge part in my leadership style (hence why I have four interns). Aside from "work,” I like to really know my team, what they like and don't like, and what motivates them. I always want them to be the best versions of themselves and know there is no limit to what they can do if they just do it.

I try to work with like-minded individuals, so this type of connection keeps us all ambitious in and out of the office.

My most memorable event:
My most memorable event would have to be The Project Fashion Show 2016. It was the first fashion show I felt my team and I provided a full, multi-sensory experience.

A time I averted a complete event disaster:
Our signage vendor's wife went into labor on the day of a huge marketing event as he was on the way to set up... on a Saturday! I tried my best to empathize while panicking because the signs lead guests through the experience, and were part of a few activations that wouldn't make sense without them. I knew that blowing up my original vendor’s cell phone wouldn’t really get me anywhere, but after a few emails, phone calls, and texts to other people, I was able to get in contact with someone else who worked at the same office. They agreed to grab the items on their day off and come help with setting up. About 30 minutes before doors opened, my team—and almost everyone in the building—came together and made it happen.

It's "such a diverse city in every aspect, and I don't think brands realize the impact they could make here," she added.Photo: Courtesy of Myeeka FergusonThe advice I would give my younger self:
I would probably tell myself to do it now! I remember having so many ideas and projects I would want to do, but would talk myself out of thinking it was too big or out of the ordinary—only to end up doing it a year or two later!

Some impressive stats I’m responsible for:
During COVID, I got to work with a beauty spa that took a big loss in online and in-person traffic, resulting in less customers and employees moving onto other companies. Through a mix of different marketing funnels—including online and in-person pop-up events—after only seven months, we were able to help increase sales by 120%, which also allowed the brand to start hiring more to bring in more business.

My ideal day OOO:
I'm usually focused on self-care or finding a new sushi restaurant to have dinner.

What’s next for me:
Next, I want to work on more brand campaigns and bring more experiences to my city of Houston, which is such a diverse city in every aspect, and I don't think brands realize the impact they could make here. By the end of 2023, I hope to add to Houston’s experiences by preparing Tag Team’s own unique space for events, brand activations, and more.
