The fall season's usual glut of bar and club openings has been delayed by the September 11 attacks, but New York nightlife is starting to bounce back, according to The New York Post. "More so than ever, people need a release," Michael Ault, formerly of Chaos and Spy Bar, told the tab. "People have a great sense of community now. It's a life-changing event and people want to talk about it." Ault is opening Pangaea downtown later this month, and says he's confident about surviving during a questionable economic time.
The terrorist attacks delayed construction on downtown lounges Wei and Butter, and other new spots were forced to open without much fanfare. Upper East Side restaurant and bar Opia was supposed to open with a Gotham magazine party on September 12, but instead opened on September 13, "purely for economic reasons," owner Frederick Lesort told the Post. TanDa partners Andy and Chris Russell are turning its opening party into a benefit after one of Andy's best friends and a major investor, Andy Golkin, was killed in the attack.
While trendy Chelsea spots Bungalow 8 and Suite 16 are still keeping tight door policies, Tapis Rouge (the Post calls it "a high-end lounge in the East Village"--remember when that would seem odd?), will open October 25 without its originally planned, ultra-exclusive members-only door policy.
Also in the Post, Page Six says that although hotspots Lotus, Man Ray and Spa have laid off staffers, Lotus co-owner David Rabin, president of the New York Nightlife Association, thinks the worst is over. "We seem to be getting a lot of calls for events in October," he says. "Halloween will be huge."
