Despite a raging fire at Universal Studios on Sunday, the MTV Movie Awards went on that evening as planned at the Gibson Amphitheatre. The press, of course, weighed in on the affair, calling out the show’s hot—and not so hot—moments. Here’s what they had to say:
The Los Angeles Times’ Todd Martens blogged about the awards show’s two musical numbers, complimenting Coldplay’s “stripped-down performance,” and reserving harsher judgment for the Pussycat Dolls, saying they “appear[ed] onstage looking like they had escaped a taping for a sexed-up Jazzercise video.” He also criticized the show for its shameless film plugs, comparing it to a paid advertisement.
Along those lines, The Boston Herald's Lauren Carter described the show as having been "thoroughly boring," but identified the dance-off between host Mike Myers and Chris Brown, as well as Coldplay's performance, as highlights.The Associated Press reported on the controversy surrounding show presenters Seth Rogen and James Franco’s lighting of a fake joint onstage as they announced the award for best summer movie. The cameras pulled back while the duo pulled out the bogus paraphernalia, but Franco claims it was the network’s idea to do the bit in the first place.
Entertainment Weekly’s John Young wrote this year’s show “fell a bit off” and missed the traditional movie parodies. He cited an audience member's impromptu comment as the most hilarious moment of the evening, and slammed the network for using what he thought were overly loud confetti machines during Coldplay's perfomance.
In a comprehensive overall take, The Envelope put together a list of the best and worst moments of the awards show, citing the Wayne and Garth skit as having gone a bit too long, calling out the network for constantly panning to Rihanna during the show, and declaring Johnny Depp’s on-stage appearance as the “most thrilling moment” of the night.
