1. HOW CANADA SHOOTINGS WILL AFFECT EVENT SECURITY: Following shooting attacks in Ottawa Wednesday, police have ramped up security at airports, government buildings, and high-profile tourist attractions and sports events across the country. The Globe and Mail: “Torontonians will see, today and over the coming days, a very visible police presence at various public institutions and in public spaces,” police chief Bill Blair said. “We have a responsibility to reassure them of their safety, by being visibly present out there with them, and doing everything possible to prevent these things from taking place.” http://bit.ly/1pDNOzJ

2. 'DAILY SHOW' HEADS TO AUSTIN FOR ELECTION SHOWS: The Daily Show With Jon Stewart will head to Austin, Texas, for a week of shows called “Democalypse 2014: South by South Mess,” in advance of the midterm elections. The program has booked guests including Democratic gubernatorial candidate and State Senator Wendy Davis and the band Spoon and will kick things off with an event called “An Evening With The Daily Show” featuring stand-up and a panel discussion with several of the show's correspondents. HOW THE NEWSEUM MADE WASHINGTON A RED-CARPET TOWN: With last week’s screening of the Brad Pitt war film Fury—with Pitt and other stars in attendance—Washington is proving its red-carpet worthiness with a perfect venue in the Newseum. Washington Post: “There, of course, are other Washington go-tos for the glitzy events usually held at Los Angeles’s TCL Chinese and New York’s Ziegfeld. The Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, the National Building Museum and the Washington Hilton come White House Correspondents’ season have all had their red carpet moments, but none, recently, as frequent as the Newseum. Robert Redford, Reese Witherspoon and Rosario Dawson have all been. ‘There’s really no one place like it in D.C.’ said Philip Dufour, president of Dufour and Company Productions, which managed the screenings for TNT’s Last Ship and Amazon’s Alpha House.”

CHICAGO:  Women in Film Chicago will host its annual Focus Awards Gala at the Museum of Broadcast Communications on November 5. Honorees include director Shira Piven, Susan Credle of Leo Burnett Worldwide, Erin Sarofsky of Sarofsky Corporation, and producer Christina Varotsis.

LAS VEGAS:  The Las Vegas Academy of the Arts will host its second annual fund-raising gala November 10 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino's Pavilion Ballroom. Artist Graham Knuttel is the honoree, and the evening will feature entertainers from the Las Vegas Strip alongside student performers.

LOS ANGELES:  The 31st Breeders’ Cup World Championships horseracing event is October 31-November 1 at Santa Anita Park. Kristin Chenoweth will perform "The Best Is Yet to Come" before the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Richie Sambora will perform the national anthem.

MIAMI/SOUTH FLORIDA:  The bar Tobacco Road—an institution in its 102nd year of business—is closing at its current location and will host a closing part Saturday night. It will continue on as a food truck with hopes of securing money to open a new location.

Toca Event Design & Production is donating $10,000 to the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade in support of its Sea Turtle Conservation Program at an event November 6.

Forrest Point is a newly opened bar and restaurant in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Emporium Design and Ben Angotti designed the space, which features large-scale murals, and the beverage list includes beer-based cocktails and a selection of milk punches. The venue seats 60 inside and 70 on a covered patio.

The International Restaurant & Foodservice Show of New York, taking place March 8-10 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, announced a new section called "the Pub," which will feature 20 craft beverages including beer, cider, wine, spirits, wine sorbae, moonshine, and whiskey.

TORONTO:  Raw Design, Ferris & Associates, and Curio have teamed up on an international design contest called Winter Stations. The contest invites artists and designers to create temporary installations that will be anchored to lifeguard stands throughout the winter. The installations will be on display February 16-March 20.
