Today in Events: Recording Academy President Put on Leave Days Before Grammys; Is Kylie Jenner Planning a Beauty Convention?; Overtourism from ‘Frozen’ Fans Threatens Austrian Village

1. RECORDING ACADEMY PRESIDENT PUT ON LEAVE DAYS BEFORE GRAMMYS: Recording Academy C.E.O. Deborah Dugan took over as leader of music’s governing board in the wake of sexist comments from her predecessor. Now, just 10 days before the Grammy Awards, Dugan has been put on leave while the academy investigates allegations of misconduct. Variety: “Sources close to the situation tell Variety that what may have taken place was a 'coup': a move by entrenched Academy veterans to discredit and remove Dugan, who came in promising significant changes to the organization, before she could establish herself with a successful first show. … While most Academy staffers were blindsided by the move, and most were not informed until minutes before it was announced, another insider said tensions had been building for some weeks, particularly after Dugan’s first board meeting as president/C.E.O. in November. At that meeting, the atmosphere was 'a little weird,' a source said. Outwardly, 'some people embraced the changes she was suggesting,' while others were less enthusiastic.”

2. IS KYLIE JENNER PLANNING A BEAUTY CONVENTION?: Reality star and beauty mogul Kylie Jenner has trademarked terms “Kylie Con,” “Kylie Kon,” and “Kylie Museum,” leading to speculation she’s planning a fan expo or interactive pop-up experience. E News: “She is seeking to use them on clothing and accessories for adults and children, as well as for beauty-related consultation services, classes, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive experiences for social entertainment purposes. … Kylie has not commented on her new trademarks, but it sure sounds like the Kylie Cosmetics founder is planning on hosting some sort of Goop-style fan convention centered around her beauty empire.”

3. OVERTOURISM FROM ‘FROZEN’ FANS THREATENS AUSTRIAN VILLAGE: Tourists have flocked to the Austrian town of Hallstatt for a glimpse of what is widely believed to be the inspiration for Arendelle, the setting of Disney’s blockbuster film Frozen. But the influx has moved tourism officials to limit tour buses and implement other procedures to manage the crowds. The situation also raises questions about the responsibilities of tour operators and other travel and hospitality providers to the places they choose to visit. The New York Times: “Churches have had to hire bouncers to keep selfie-seeking tourists from interrupting funerals and Sunday services, according to news reports. Guests are warned not to use drones or trample village property. After a fire broke out in November, Hallstatt’s mayor, Alexander Scheutz, implored travelers to stay home so locals could fix the buildings.”
