NATIONAL: LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD hosted its 31st annual GLAAD Media Awards virtually on July 30. The event was streamed on Facebook and YouTube, and it will air on Logo on Aug. 3. The ceremony was hosted by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere, and featured performances from Chloe x Halle, Shea Diamond, and Ben Platt.
MONTREAL: This year's Montreal marathon, which was set to take place Sept. 19 and 20, has been canceled after Quebec health officials decided it would be too difficult to ensure the event complied with safety measures. This year's race would have marked the 30th anniversary of the marathon.
OSHAWA, ONTARIO: In June, the Music Hall of Oshawa closed its doors due to financial difficulties. Now the venue plans to reopen in a new location and with a new name, with a restaurant on the top floor, a main hall that holds 1,000, and a basement bar that will hold between 350 and 500. The new space, which does not yet have a name, hopes to hold events by New Year’s Eve depending on COVID-19-related restrictions.
TORONTO: Toronto’s Sherway Gardens Drive-In opened on July 30. The mall partnered with the city of Toronto to convert its parking lot into an outdoor cinema for three consecutive weekends. It’s part of the new Drive-InTO, a citywide initiative to bring pop-up theaters to various locations.
VANCOUVER: Designed as the summer equivalent to Tourism Vancouver’s Dine Out winter festival, Dine OutSide is a summer food and drink celebration that will run from Aug. 21 to Sept. 21. Participating restaurants will offer diners prix fixe menus at $15, $25, $35, or $45 price points. This summer initiative will also offer special promotional deals and “take-outside” picnic packs to enjoy on pop-up patios and in parks around the city. Participating hotels and restaurants will be announced on Aug. 13.
