CANADA: BioSteel Makes NHL Commercial Debut, Quebec Theater Project Honors Veterans, Young Chef Young Waiter Canada Crowns Winners, and More

GLOBAL: San Juan’s premier lifestyle resort, La Concha Resort, and adults-only boutique hotel, Condado Ocean Club, announced the appointment of new general managers. Miguel 'Mike' Rivera has been appointed general manager of La Concha Resort and Carlo F. Chávez appointed general manager of Condado Ocean Club. Rivera comes to his role from his position as the vice president of operations at The Condado Collection. Meanwhile, Chávez most recently comes from The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, where he held the role of director of hotel operations.

NATIONAL: BioSteel, a fast-growing hydration brand in sports, has released its first commercial spot as it begins its inaugural season as the Official Hydration Partner of the National Hockey League. The spot, “NHL Hydration Break,” which premiered on Oct. 11 on ESPN, aims to showcase the intensity and focus experienced by hockey players during a game through the perspective of players rehydrating for their next shift. Variations of the spot ran in the U.S. and Canada and featured a variety of NHL stars from across the league. The spot will air throughout the fall season on ESPN, Sportsnet, and TVA. 

SHERBROOKE, QUE.: Theatre des Petites Lanternes announced the world premiere of Projet Monarques at the Universite de Sherbrooke’s cultural center on Nov. 8 for Remembrance Day. Projet Monarques, co-written by Angèle SĂ©guin and AmĂ©lie Bergeron, and directed by Bergeron, is a bilingual, pan-Canadian theater project that aims to address operational and post-traumatic stress injuries experienced by veterans and military personnel. Between February and May of 2021, writing workshops held from Nova Scotia to British Columbia made it possible to meet with over 200 veterans, soldiers, and their loved ones to listen to their stories. Projet Monarques will tour Quebec in January in French; the English version will follow in April with presentations across Canada in theaters and military environments. 

TORONTO: On Oct. 17 at the Don Alfonso restaurant, Liberty Entertainment Group hosted the Young Chef Young Waiter Canada (YCYW) Finals Competition. The competition, which was founded in 1979, is open to all young chefs and waiters under the age of 26. The aim of the competition is to promote hospitality as a career, profession, and vocation, and to uncover the best young talent in the industry. Meal and service prep began around 9 a.m., with lunch being served at 1 p.m. Following the winning announcement at 2 p.m. was a reception for judges, sponsors, and VIP guests. The winners of the competition will go on to represent Canada at the world YCYW finals in Monaco in November.
