NATIONAL: WestJet has unveiled 20 new routes and three new destinations to the airline's summer schedule, further connecting Western Canada and the U.S. New non-stop service is now available to Washington Dulles, Detroit, and Minneapolis, and new routes have been added to Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Nashville, and Seattle.
CALGARY: The annual Ethnik Festival of Art & Culture is returning to the TELUS Convention Centre this year Feb. 24-25. During the event, members of the Afro-Canadian/Caribbean communities will come together to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, and share their vibrant cultural traditions. Festival activities take place from 12-6 p.m. and will feature local and international talents.
TORONTO: It's official: Canopy by Hilton Toronto Yorkville is now open, marking the brand's Canadian debut. The 184-room property features an indoor pool, a modern fitness center incorporating local street art, a transfer lounge, and 3,500 square feet of meeting space. There are also two on-site dining concepts: signature restaurant Día and Virtu Café & Provisions for lighter fare.
VANCOUVER: The Vancouver Chinatown Foundation has received $1.8 million to enhance tourism experiences in the city's historic Chinatown, which has been an integral part of the social, cultural, and commercial fabric of Vancouver for more than 135 years. The investment will be used to modernize iconic neighborhood buildings, including the Chinese Cultural Centre, the Chinatown Storytelling Centre, and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Gardens, with new lighting, signage, and other improvements.
The Vancouver Aquarium has welcomed two new residents: rescued harbour seals. Due to the severity of their injuries, they have been deemed non-releasable by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Aquarium will now be their home, and the public is encouraged to visit them. The aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre is Canada's only dedicated marine mammal rescue facility and one of the largest in the world. It has rescued and rehabilitated marine mammals for more than 60 years.
