GLOBAL: Privately-owned hospitality group Kanava Hotels & Resorts has announced its new brand name: Empiria Group. The change celebrates the company’s 30 years in business and its plans for further development. Empiria Group currently holds seven luxury properties in Greece, including Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort in Santorini, and Korona Boutique Hotel on the Mani Peninsula.

CALGARY: The 20th anniversary Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) is taking place April 20-30 at Globe Cinema. CUFF will be an 11-day, in-person celebration of film, offering screenings, special events, and parties to the filmmakers in attendance. Expect the best new independent films, an annual retro all-you-can-eat cereal party, custom arcade cabinets, DJs before every show, and a full bar.

EDMONTON: The 115th annual Edmonton Music & Speech Arts Festival is slated for April 17-29. The fest bills itself as the best place to watch music students, actors, musicians, and music lovers showcase their passions in front of a live audience. More than 1,400 single and group entrants will perform and compete at MacEwan University’s Alberta College Campus, Robertson-Wesley United Church, the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre, and Archbishop MacDonald Catholic High School. All events are free.

TORONTO: Every spring, Hot Docs Toronto showcases hundreds of films at the century-old Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto’s Annex neighborhood, which is part of the broader Bloor Street cultural district. This year, the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival will take place April 27-May 7, where eventgoers can enjoy a plethora of documentary screenings and other professional development programming. Tickets are available on the Hot Docs website.

VANCOUVER: Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 has announced that four host First Nations artists have been chosen to work together to create and design the visual identity for the games: Levi Nelson of Lil’wat Nation, Olivia George of Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Mack Paul of Musqueam Nation, and Ray Natraoro of Squamish Nation were selected through an open call for artist submissions released by the organizing committee last fall. This is a first-of-its-kind inclusive initiative for the Invictus Games, as well as for the First Nations involved, as they will be developing one comprehensive identity that represents each of the nations.
