Shameka Jennings, MTA, CMP 26, Event and Programming Manager National League for Nursing, Washington, D.C.
What I do: “I coordinate five to 10 events a year with an amazing team for more than 40,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members in nursing education and nurse faculty.”
How I got here: “I served as chair of the student activities board in college and quickly realized I was spending more time planning events than doing my homework. Upon graduation, I went to The George Washington University to get a master’s in tourism administration with a focus on event and meeting management.”
Next-gen idea: Seeking to increase exposure for her organization and fulfill the demand from its members for more professional development, Jennings spearheaded a team that developed a regional event model offering multiple workshops over one or two days that would travel the country bimonthly—sort of a mobile university. “We are fine-tuning the details with the intentions of rolling out in 2017.”
Giveback: In her spare time, Jennings teaches at a local community college in the hospitality program to engage the future of the industry.
