40 Under 40: Jason Sick, Red Velvet Events

Jason Sick, 35, works in Austin, Texas, as program manager at Red Velvet Events. As a 2017 40 Under 40 honoree, Sick discusses his passion for the events industry

What I do: I partner with corporate clients to plan and execute their meetings, special events and destination management needs across the United States. How I got here: My personal history with event planning goes back to my childhood working with my mother in her event decor business. After finishing graduate school, I started my career planning events at The University of Texas at Austin for eight years. I then took the leap from educational events to corporate events and landed my dream job with Red Velvet Events. My greatest career accomplishment: I was told by a client who has decades of experience planning events for a major U.S. corporation that we were the best DMC she has ever worked with. Nothing makes me prouder than knowing I have given my clients a level of service that exceeds their expectations. Impressive stats: I recently was responsible for coordinating 53 tents for a single, three-hour event ranging in size from 10 feet by 10 feet to 50 feet by 120 feet. This was not only the largest tent request from a client in the history of our company, but also the largest order our tent partner had ever done! What I’m working on: For me, 2017 is the year of reinventing the familiar. Whether it be for repeat clients who have hosted their meetings in Austin for years or clients requesting the ever-popular Texas theme for their events, this year I’m excited to step outside our comfort zones to find new and creative spins on what has been done in the past. What I do outside of work: My favorite thing to do in my free time is travel planning. I take at least one international vacation per year, and nothing relieves stress more than doing extensive research and building hour-by-hour travel itineraries. Five phrases that identify me: Event planner; avid traveler; pop culture guru; wine lover; movie buff
