Jessica Cote, 27, works in Auburn Mills, Michigan, as corporate meeting planner at Volkswagen Group of America (contracted by HRG North America). As a 2017 40 Under 40 honoree, Cote discusses her passion for the events industry.

What I do: Although each day is different and provides its own set of new challenges, in a nutshell, I plan the logistics from start to finish of whatever unique program comes my way. And I get to travel!
How I got here: I was fresh out of college and heard through the grapevine (my aunt used to work here) that HRG had an open intern position in the travel, meetings and events department. Although I was looking for a full-time position, this seemed like an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I came in to interview for the intern position, but based on my qualifications, they suggested I apply for the open meeting coordinator position instead. I got the job and was promoted to corporate meeting planner a couple of years later.
My greatest career accomplishment: It would have to be planning the Audi Service & Parts Conference in
Austin, Texas, in February 2016. It was my largest program to date—1,000 people—and man, was it fun to see it come to life.
Impressive stats: I handle an average of 20 to 25 meetings per year, managing an estimated total budget of just over $3 million.
A specific improvement I’ve made: I’m a millennial, right? Technology is kind of our thing. I am the subject matter expert for the online registration tool in our department. I also introduced our department to online mobile app technology that allows us to manage that ourselves.
What I’m working on: I am super excited for this year’s corporate fleet preview in
Salt Lake City in June. We’ll have a lot of great attendees from companies across the United States, a ride-and-drive through beautiful Salt Lake City in some amazing vehicles and a fun off-site event. What more could you ask for?
What I do outside of work: I try to spend as much time as possible with family and friends. I am back and forth to Grand Rapids, Michigan, often to see my boyfriend, and I’m enjoying getting to know what an awesome city that is. I love going to concerts, so that’s usually how I spend most of my weekends in the summer. And if I may be somewhat cliche for a minute, shopping is also my weakness.
