There is no typical day, as one day I could be working on an event budget, coming up with an event concept and design, or being on the phone with Secret Service planning security for a VIP. How I got here: I got into events accidentally as my background was in public relations with a focus on radio. Although I had worked media rooms at national conventions and witnessed event planners at work, it wasn’t until I got into the industry that I realized this was my true calling. My first opportunity was assisting in planning a large national Hispanic convention. It was then I realized the need for multicultural event planners who understood this market, so I decided to work with clients who needed that help. My greatest career accomplishment: I have worked with every sitting U.S. president since Bill Clinton, as well as several other heads of state. To think I began this business by myself 10 years ago and accomplished that within the first decade is a huge matter of pride for me. Impressive stats: We typically come in under budget for every client event. Throughout the event planning process, we are consistently taking a look at the costs and coming up with creative ways to stretch the budget and make it work. At the end of the day, saving money is one of the most important deliverables we can offer our clients. A specific improvement I’ve made: One of the biggest returns for our clients has been using software to let them know in real time when certain key guests have arrived and where we are in terms of capacity for the event, as well as where there may be gaps we need to fill in. What I’m working on: We are starting to expand and reflect the growing needs of the meetings market. No longer is it strict event design and planning; we take a look at ROI and audience retention at the events, so it’s about planning activities that will remain in guests’ minds and serve as useful tools for them after the event is over. What I do outside of work: I have held leadership positions within the Network of Latino Meeting Professionals, and in my free time I like to travel and learn about new places. Last year I was blessed with the opportunity to drive all over Italy. I am also into wines and love to visit wineries and vineyards. This year, that is on hold, however, as I am expecting my first child! Phrases that identify me: Proud Latina; event planner; world traveler; wine lover; foodie
