The National Building Museum hosted its 25th annual Honor Awards for 600 people on May 17 to recognize notable names and new innovators in the building community. With a focus on the future, organizers reached out to architecture firm the Rockwell Group to create an interactive technology program, Build Up!, that allowed guests to become architects and builders on-site with their work displayed for all to see.

“We had seen a lot of installations that Rockwell Group had created for other events, and when we asked David [Rockwell] to be our speaker, we asked if his group could create something,” said Jessie Cochran, development event manager for the museum. “We wanted it to be special and fun, since it was an anniversary celebration.”

The company used four iPad stations where guests could choose between five different building shapes and then touch the screen to lengthen or widen the building to their liking. When users removed their finger from the computer, the building they created showed up on a large four-sided screen from A.E. Mitchell & Company in the center of the event space. As more people created buildings, a cityscape emerged on the screen, with added elements like blimps, fireworks, and planes flying.
