Today in the Twin Cities: Beer-Fueled Cars, Purple Rain, and Quite a Bit of Protesting

With attention shifting focus from the Gulf Coast to Minneapolis-St. Paul, the 2008 Republican National Convention is finally in full swing. Here are a few event-related items popping up about the goings-on in Minnesota:

  • To promote its recent green efforts, General Motors provided 700 hybrid and alternative-fuel cars to attendees of both conventions, including ones that run on the ethanol rendered from stale beer. [Exhibitors Daily]
  • Republican delegates are on edge after hearing rumors that some protestors plan to throw “urine bombs” at those trying to enter the Xcel Energy Center. [Salt Lake Tribune]
  • One Ad Age reporter compared the media welcome parties at both conventions, concluding that Saturday’s Republican event (held at the same club where Prince filmed much of Purple Rain) was “classier.” [Ad Age]
  • The 2008 RNC Law Enforcement and Public Safety Public Affairs Subcommittee issued a warning to members of the media, relaying that violent protestors may target them. [Radar]
  • Big music acts aren’t just for the A-list parties at the conventions: Rage Against the Machine held an a capella concert for protestors yesterday on the lawn of the Minnesota State Capitol after a lack of a permit forced the band to cancel a formal show. [Star Tribune]
