1. SEE THE N.F.L.’S SECRET SUPER BOWL DEMANDS: Before selecting a Super Bowl host city, the N.F.L. makes a long list of demands that touch on every aspect of the game and the events leading up to it. That list is not released to the public, which in many cases finances these perks, but a leaked copy provides insight into the league’s requirements. Minneapolis Star Tribune: “In 153 pages of previously-secret bid specifications, the plan to have the NFL control many of the public and private aspects of the event is outlined. … Free police escorts for team owners, and 35,000 free parking spaces. Presidential suites at no cost in high-end hotels. Free billboards across the Twin Cities. Guarantees to receive all revenue from the game’s ticket sales—even a requirement for NFL-preferred ATMs at the stadium.” http://strib.mn/UlWCBw
2. SPONSORS QUESTION QATAR AS NEXT WORLD CUP HOST: Most of the major sponsors of the FIFA World Cup—Sony, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Visa, Hyundai, BP, and Budweiser—are questioning the integrity of the host-selection process that led to Qatar winning the 2022 tournament. Hollywood Reporter: “Britain's Sunday Times newspaper has been running a series of articles detailing millions of dollars in bribes, as well as trade deals, which secured votes for Qatar's surprise victory in 2010. The small Gulf state beat out competition from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States despite having little tradition of the game in the country—and summer temperatures that can top 120 degrees Fahrenheit. FIFA is carrying out a $6 million internal investigation into the bidding process.” http://bit.ly/1khm6Vx
3. WHY THE CANNES LIONS AWARDS NEED TO CHANGE: Cannes Lions, the largest award show for advertising and creative communications, takes place next week in Cannes, France. Some insiders say the program has added too many categories and made the awards less special. Advertising Age: "If Cannes keeps adding categories, it should also consider deleting categories, if only to make the point that awards shows aren't just adding them to make money," said one former juror. "It is important to recognize creativity in every sector in the industry, but in time there will be certain categories that may not be as relevant as others." http://bit.ly/1lkeSVd
