New Museum Puts New Museum on Bowery

The New Museum of Contemporary Art will host a groundbreaking ceremony today to launch construction of its new building on the Bowery. The new 60,000-square-foot, seven-story New Museum is being designed by the Tokyo-based firm Sejima and Nishizawa/SANAA, and will be the first art museum constructed in downtown Manhattan in more than a century. The building will feature column-free exhibition spaces, a 188-seat theater, classrooms, a library, a café, and rooftop terraces. The facility is scheduled to open in late 2007.
