October 1, 2013: How the Government Shutdown Will Affect Events, YouTube Launches Music Award Show, Apple Named Most Valuable Brand

1. HOW THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WILL AFFECT EVENTS: Many political fund-raising events will be cancelled as the government shuts down starting today. Lawmakers do not want to be seen toasting themselves during the tense time. Politico: "Some will cancel but it is not uncomplicated,” said one Democratic fund-raiser. β€œThe caterers are still going to charge for food and possibly laborβ€”some could charge 100 percent of estimate if you cancel less than 72 hours. They have already ordered the food by now and in a union shop the staff has likely been scheduled so depending on the cancellation policy they likely will get paid." http://politi.co/16DAEyw

2. YOUTUBE LAUNCHES MUSIC AWARD SHOW: Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Arcade Fire are among the performers scheduled for the first YouTube music award show, scheduled for November 3 at Pier 36 in New York. Actor Jason Schwartzman will host, and Spike Jonze is the creative director. Billboard: "We’re trying to create live videos during the award shows so that the experience becomes more about creating than presenting," said YouTube's vice president of marketing, Danielle Tiedt. "Music is our bread and butter and our heart and soul here at YouTube. Our main goal is to not just do another award show. We wanted to do something special." http://bit.ly/18n2bBu

3. APPLE NAMED MOST VALUABLE BRAND: After 14 years at the top of Interbrand's "Best Global Brands" report, Coke is no longer number one. This year, though, Apple took the top spot, pushing Coke to runner-up. AdWeek: "Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple's name increased in worth by nearly 30 percent in the last year to $98.3 billion, according to the Omnicom Group-owned branding firm, jumping from second place to the top slot. The technology brand was ranked eighth by Interbrand in 2011." See the entire list: http://bit.ly/19QjZUM
