Six months before the Oscar ceremony is supposed to find a new Hollywood home, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences has threatened to postpone--or maybe cancel--the use of the new venue if the developer doesn't resolve security issues related to possible terrorist attacks. The 2002 Academy Awards are slated to be held on March 24 in the Kodak Theatre, part of the new Hollywood & Highland retail and entertainment complex. But according to Inside.com, the Academy told developer TrizecHahn that if several key issues (including security measures and other issues) aren't resolved by October 15, Oscar returns to the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.
Academy executive director Bruce Davis says the developer has also failed to provide a large, open area for all the TV trucks that will cover the ceremony, and the Academy wants access to the the complex's stores on the day of the event in order to perform bomb sweeps. We're sure this isn't the only event that will be watching security issues very closely in the wake of the World Trade Center attacks.
