With a plethora of conferences, benefits, expos, award shows, and festivals taking place each year, New York is a city with no shortage of things to do. Breaking through in such a crowded marketplace is therefore no easy task, a challenge where timing, location, host, and experience all play a role in attracting the attention of potential attendees.

It’s no surprise then that the most influential events in New York are as varied and unique as the city and its residents. There are gatherings like the New York International Auto Show and New Year’s Eve in Times Square that draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands, while other functions like the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy and the Peabody Awards only grant admission to an elite few. Some, like the U.S. Open and the Westminster Dog Show, have existed since the 19th century, and others, like the Governors Ball Music Festival and Social Media Week, are less than a decade old.

Here’s a look at the top 100 events that take place in New York year after year.

To choose and rank the annual events on this list, we look at several factors, including economic impact, buzz, innovation, and an event's prominence within the communities it intends to serve.
