A cactus might not be the first plant one would think of to spruce up an event, but the desert plant can offer a bold, unique alternative to typical flowers and greenery. Here’s a look at how events have incorporated real cacti into their designs, and used the plants as inspiration for desert-theme art installations, props, and more.
ESPY Awards Pre-Party

Coachella

Instagram hosted its first Coachella party this year, taking over the Pond Estate in Palm Springs. The social-media platform teamed up with experiential agency Manifold and artist D'ana Nunez of COVL for Instagram Desert Chill. The event’s aesthetic revolved around Nunez's abstract mural, which drew inspiration from the desert landscape and the 1970s. Ace Hotel held its 11th annual Desert Gold event during Coachella. A highlight was "Quartet," a series of musical compositions generated by the electronic impulses produced by plants, including cacti. Using a MIDI controller, the collaboration between Moog, Data Garden, and Dublab allowed listeners to monitor the plants' subtle biorhythms. Boobyball

Rethink Breast Cancer’s 17th annual fund-raiser took place in October 2018 at Rebel in Toronto. The event, which was designed in house, featured a Wild West theme. The host organization’s logo was displayed in a pink neon sign, surrounded by haystacks, cactus cutouts, and other on-theme props. Marriott Event

Marriott International celebrated its merger with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide with an event in June 2017 at Hunt & Fish Club in New York. The hotel brand celebrated the Luxury Collection with a vignette inspired by its Southwest properties, complete with a display of cactus plants. H&M Loves Coachella Launch

Teva x Jhené Aiko Launch

In 2017, singer Jhené Aiko celebrated the launch of her new Teva collection with a private event at NeueHouse in Los Angeles. The new line, which combines the brand's signature sandal silhouettes with Aiko's eclectic style, were showcased in a desert-theme display. The event was produced by Crystal Raymond.
