CALGARY: Heritage Park has canceled its Once Upon A Time Christmas event and closed its Market Nights Christmas Market; all guests who prepurchased tickets will receive a refund. To still support Heritage Park this holiday season, Calgarians can make a donation or order meals for curbside pickup.
EDMONTON: Kaleo Collective and St. Albert Organization held their "Little Santas" event this past weekend to help children of single-mother families in Edmonton give gifts to their moms. At the drive-thru Christmas shop, children were able to pick gifts from options presented by volunteers and each family also went home with a gingerbread house and dinner from Socrates Restaurant. Fifty mothers and 95 children participated in the event.
TORONTO: The people of Toronto are joining a worldwide bell-ringing event on Christmas Eve in an effort to brighten the 2020 holiday season. At 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, participants are encouraged to go out on their doorsteps or balconies to ring a bell for this event, which aims to safely bring joy and community bonding during a time when many of the usual holiday traditions have been canceled.
Yonge St. is getting an upgrade in 2021 to revamp the congested street through a project titled YongeTOmorrow. Although nothing is confirmed, the blueprint includes the addition of pedestrian priority zones with restricted car access, cycle tracks, curbside activity zones, and furnishing zones complete with seating and plants. The recommended design concept will go before the city’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee for review in January.
VANCOUVER: Scuba Claus is returning to the Vancouver Aquarium on Dec. 20 for a virtual holiday show. Families will help Scuba Claus search for the missing keys to Santa’s toy cupboard while visiting penguins, sea lions, otters, and other aquatic friends along the way, all from their living rooms. Tickets are $9.99 per household, and profits will go towards the Vancouver Aquarium and its animals.
