CANADA: Skate Canada Announces Cancellations, Calgary Stampede Updates, A Tech Conference Goes Virtual and More

INTERNATIONAL: Aloft Tulum’s grand opening is taking place Feb. 1 and will be the first Marriott International property to debut in Tulum, Quintana Roo. The bohemian-inspired hotel will feature 140 guest rooms and suites including a signature rooftop lounge and bar and 2,761 square feet of indoor meeting space for as many as 240 guests.

NATIONAL: Skate Canada has announced that both the 2021 National Skating Championships and the Skating Canada Cup have been canceled due to COVID-19. The championship competitions were originally scheduled to take place Feb. 8-14 in Vancouver.

CALGARY: As one of the biggest rodeo events in North America, Calgary Stampede is still looking for a way to host its 2021 edition. The annual event dates back to 1912 and celebrates the life of the western cowboy with judging contests, big names in entertainment, cultural exhibits and more. The event’s organizers are expected to announce the fate of 2021’s Calgary Stampede sometime in March.

MONTREAL: Independent theater company Scapegoat Carnivale is hosting a digital initiative in response to COVID-19 dubbed Soliciting Prophecy. The event’s debut will take place Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. featuring a series of digital works, produced by a variety of artists, on topics and themes of prophecy. Attendees can stream the event via Scapegoat Carnivale’s website.

TORONTO: Global technology conference Collision has canceled its plans for the June 2021 event to be held in Toronto and will now take place online for the second year in a row. Last year, 32,000 people streamed the online conference to listen to discussions from stars such as Paris Hilton and Shaquille O’Neal, plus executives from PayPal, Netflix, Uber and more.
