NATIONAL: Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF, the largest fundraising event in Canada that raises funds for type 1 diabetes research, is taking place as a virtual event this year. Participants can join an immersive and interactive virtual world with challenges, prizes, entertainment, virtual booths and more, along with a virtual finish line celebration on June 13.
Volunteer MBC has announced that the Virtual V-Oscars, presented by Maritime Ontario, will be streamed live on June 17 and hosted by UN Women Canadian delegate, TV host and activist Urz Heer. The volunteer recognition awards are free to attend and will feature performances from Lamoi Simmonds, Ori Dagan, danceShala and Clarkson Music Theatre.
The first annual Queerfolk Fest will take place virtually on June 12. The digital festival is sponsored by San Francisco nonprofit Bluegrass Pride and is the brainchild of Pineworks Creative and Cambridge, Mass., music venue Club Passim. The six-hour event, which has a suggested price of $20 per viewer, will feature performances from Mary Gauthier, Jaimee Harris, The Accidentals, lewloh and other LGBTQ-identifying artists and bands.
MONTREAL: The International Skating Union has provisionally awarded the 2024 world figure skating championships to Montreal, taking place March 18-24, 2024. The March 2020 event had been scheduled for Montreal, but due to the pandemic was canceled just five days before it was slated to begin. The 2022 event will take place in Montpellier, France, and the 2023 event will take place in Saitama, Japan.
TORONTO: This year’s Q107 Great Canadian Concert will take place as a drive-in event on July 1. Held at the Guildwood GO Station Main Lot, the concert will feature tributes to Alanis Morissette, Tom Petty, U2, Journey, Black Sabbath and Queen. Registration is required, with tickets costing $40-$60 per vehicle.
