CANADA: Calgary Folk Fest and Taste of Edmonton Kick Off, a ’50s Drive-In Comes to Toronto and More

CALGARY: The 42nd edition of the Calgary Folk Fest kicked off on July 22 and runs through July 28, with limited capacity at Princes’ Island Park. Rather than its typical multistage event, the outdoor concert series is called Summer Serenades, and all performances are streaming live on YouTube along with live interviews and more. For in-person guests, seating has been organized into zones for contact tracing and social distancing purposes; each zone is given a staggered arrival time, and masks are mandatory in shared spaces.

The 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship kicks off Aug. 20, when Canada’s National Women’s Team will square off against Finland. All 31 games in the tournament will be played at WinSport Arena at Calgary’s Canada Olympic Park from Aug. 20-31. This marks the eighth time Canada has hosted the championship, which features teams from 10 countries.

EDMONTON: The Taste of Edmonton, the city's first major food festival since the start of the pandemic, kicked off July 22 and runs through Aug. 1 at Churchill Square. There are over 150 food and drink items from 52 vendors, and all tents are separated by 6 feet.

MONTREAL: Life-size animatronic dinosaurs are coming to Quartier DIX30 in Brossard for Jurassic Fest Montreal this fall. The festival will take place from Oct. 22-30, and highlights include a 15-meter T-Rex and a 10-meter Triceratops. Attendees will also learn about the history of dinosaurs, see fossils and more; tickets start at $18 per adult.

TORONTO: The Dusty Star Drive-In Diner, a new 1950s-inspired pop-up experience, will be in Toronto from Aug. 13-15 at the Galleria Mall parking lot. The event will feature milkshakes, hot dogs, fries and other classics as well as a bar from Hop City Brewery. There will also be market vendors selling vintage clothing and handmade goods, along with a DJ. Tickets cost $25 per car to reserve a parking spot or a picnic table for up to six people.
