NATIONAL: The Events Industry Council has joined The Code, an initiative to prevent the sexual exploitation of children, with the goal of providing awareness, tools and support to the travel and tourism industry. The new partnership will help establish policies and procedures, train employees, include a clause in contracts, and provide information to travelers on how to prevent and report suspected cases.
Kate Patay, chief strategist at Patay Consulting, received the prestigious Icon Award from the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE) earlier this week at the NACE Experience Conference. Patay is a founding member of the Reno-Tahoe NACE chapter and vice president of the NACE National Board. She’s also the chairperson of the SEARCH Foundation.
LOS ANGELES: Rodenberry Entertainment will be celebrating what would have been the late Gene Roddenberry's 100th birthday on Aug. 19. The gala will be at NeueHouse Hollywood and will be co-hosted by Joel McHale and Rod Roddenberry. Roddenberry was the creator of Star Trek, and other honorary hosts include Rosario Dawson, Whoopi Goldberg and Sir Patrick Stewart.
NEW YORK: The Samuel Waxman Cancer Foundation’s eighth annual Collaborating for a Cure Ladies Luncheon will take place on Aug. 20 at the T-Bar restaurant in Southampton. Philanthropist Jean Shafiroff will be honored, and there will also be a live fashion show during the event.
PALM DESERT, CALIF: JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa recently opened the JW Entertainment Zone, a 12,000-square-foot arcade. The space, open to hotel guests, group bookings and the public, features classics like Pac-Man and Skee Ball along with high-tech simulators, motocross racing games and duckpin bowling. The JW Entertainment Zone is part of the 884-room resort's multimillion dollar renovation project, which also includes the new Sinatra Ballroom.
