NATIONAL: The Chair-man Mills Corporation, Canada’s leading national tent and event rentals company, has named Allison Freeman as its chief executive officer. Freeman brings experience in leading growth strategies that drive results and commitment to fostering company cultures of purpose, inclusion, and customer-centricity. After starting her career in management consulting with Accenture and Bain & Company, Freeman has held successive leadership roles at Holt Renfrew, Mama Earth Organics, and Sleep Country Canada.
HALIFAX: The Halifax Oyster Festival is Canada’s largest oyster festival. The internationally recognized celebration of oysters presents an all-you-can sample raw bar over the course of three tasting sessions, plus wine, beer, spirits, cider, and other foods all produced in Nova Scotia. Taking place on the Halifax waterfront from Sept. 23-24, visitors can visit oyster farm booths to meet farmers and taste their products while learning about oyster culture. Shucking demos and the Nova Scotia Shucking Championship will be held on the main stage, and live music will be performed nightly. Tickets are available on the festival’s website.
OTTAWA: It was recently announced that Ottawa is set to host more than 1,000 delegates from AFOA Canada (formerly known as Aboriginal Financial Officers Association) for the organization's national conference that runs Feb. 14-16, 2023. AFOA Canada was founded in 1999 as a not-for-profit to help Indigenous people better manage their communities through a focus on enhancing management, finance, and governance practices and skills. Ottawa Tourism said that AFOA Canada recognized a number of key benefits of hosting its 2023 event in Ottawa, including “the city’s focus on communities, its position as Canada’s capital, and a repositioning and renewed focus from 2023 on Indigenous tourism.”
TORONTO: The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Art Gallery of Ontario announced the acquisition and exhibition of 60 new works of art by 10 Canadian artists, made possible by the Canada Now Photography Acquisition Initiative. Conceived in the spring of 2020 by photographer Edward Burtynsky and the Nicholas Metivier Gallery, the Canada Now initiative was designed as a response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on artists and the art market in Canada. A selection of these artworks will be featured in the exhibition CANADA NOW: New Photography Acquisitions, opening at The Image Centre on Sept. 14, 2022.
Liberty Entertainment Group has recently announced the 2022 version of its macabre Halloween celebration, Captain Morgan Presents Legends of Horror. The annual installation, located on the grounds of the historic Casa Loma, will be open Sept. 30-Oct. 31. Events returning to the celebration include an immersive theatrical interpretation of classic horror characters and decor on a walking trail more than a mile long, plus a themed food and beverage program at the Captain Morgan Bar and Lounge. New this year is a 45-minute immersive haunted house tour dubbed "Zombie Apocalypse," created in partnership with Secret City Adventures.
