GLOBAL: Atlantis Paradise Island, the iconic destination resort in the Bahamas, has announced that the inaugural Nassau Paradise Island Wine & Food Festival (NPIWFF) will take place March 15-19. The five-day festival will showcase world-renowned top chefs, master sommeliers, mixologists, and notable TV personalities, including Tony Abou-Ganim, Alex Guarnaschelli, JJ Johnson, Aarón Sánchez, Alon Shaya, Michael White, and Andrew Zimmern. There will also be a performance by rapper Wyclef Jean at Jerk Jam on March 18. The festival will highlight the Bahamas as a growing culinary and entertainment hub while generating awareness for Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, a nonprofit that protects and preserves marine wildlife and its endangered habitats throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean seas. NATIONAL: Government of Canada has announced a temporary negative COVID-19 test requirement for travelers arriving from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, or Macao. As of Jan. 5, all air travelers who are two years of age and older and are arriving on flights originating from those destinations will need to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result (taken no more than two days before their departure) to the airline prior to boarding. The test could be either a negative molecular test (such as a PCR test) or a negative antigen test that has documentation to show that it has been monitored by a telehealth service or an accredited laboratory or testing provider.
AUNDECK OMNI KANING FIRST NATION, ONT.: Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO) has announced the establishment of the Indigenous Cultural Integrity Advisory Committee to support the respectful growth of Indigenous tourism in Ontario. The goal is to protect the knowledge, values, beliefs, and traditions of all indigenous peoples in Ontario while developing tourism initiatives that are in high demand. ITO has appointed 14 committee members to ensure the industry is equipped with culturally respectful tools and resources to conduct business in a responsible manner.
TORONTO: Michelin-starred chef Ernesto Iaccarino of Itayl's Amalfi Coast heads to Toronto the week of Jan. 16 for a kitchen takeover at Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto (which was recently named second in Best Italian Restaurant in the World 2023 by 50 Top Italy). A public, ticketed dinner will take place Jan. 17 and will feature an exclusive tasting menu and wine pairing for $350 per person, plus taxes and gratuities. Reservations can be made now.
VICTORIA, B.C.: Destination Greater Victoria, Downtown Victoria Business District Association, and The National Toy Museum of Canada have announced that Capital City Comic Con—which last took place September 2022, a shift from its original dates in March 2022 due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant—will go on hiatus for 2023. According to the organizations, the 2022 event was well received by the community, well attended, and supported by a number of key sponsors. But given the resources and demands required to plan the event in its traditional month of March in 2023, they have identified that an event in 2023 is beyond their capacity.
