CANADA: New Flights From Ontario to Europe, Montréal Seedy Weekend Returns, Pickering Casino Resort Hotel Opens, and More

GLOBAL: The island of Jamaica is preparing to host the first Global Tourism Resilience Conference from Feb. 15-17. The event will focus on the importance of building resilience in the tourism sector for handling future disruptions. The event  is expected to feature approximately 40 international speakers from Africa, Asia, Europe, the U.S., and the Caribbean. The conference is being driven by the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, which is headquartered at the University of the West Indies, Kingston. Topics of focus will include enhancing competitiveness and sustainability, cross-sectorial collaborations, international funding and technical assistance, and the establishment of resilience barometers.

HAMILTON, ONT.: PLAY, a low-cost airline operating flights between Iceland and Europe, has announced service in Canada, with the first flights to Europe taking off in summer 2023. Travelers can now book tickets from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport to 26 European destinations including London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Brussels, and Stockholm. Flight service will begin on June 22.  

MONTRÉAL: Montréal Seedy Weekend is returning Feb. 4-5. Organized by Cultiver Montréal and presented by Espace pour la vie, the 2023 edition will be held under the theme of Solidarity Seeds and invites the public to discover the connections between seed growers, market gardeners, citizens, and seed biodiversity. The event will take place at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium. Along with attending workshops and panels, eventgoers can purchase local and ecological seeds from 20 Quebec seed companies.

TORONTO: Great Canadian Entertainment has announced that the brand-new 275-room Pickering Casino Resort Hotel is now open and accepting reservations. The property is located within the Pickering Casino Resort, the newly opened $500 million entertainment destination that features a 96,000-square-foot casino, Great Canadian Sportsbook, dining venues, a 2,500-seat theatre and event space, and flexible meeting space. Planners can expect hosting space for up to 2,500 guests, catering, state-of-the-art technology, and multiple entertainment options that are ideal for conferences, corporate meetings, and retreats.

VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C.: Last week, PacifiCan announced more than $3.9 million in funding for 21 projects across Vancouver Island and the coast. This includes $155,000 for two projects funded through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund and more than $3.7 million for 19 projects funded through the Tourism Relief Fund. The Southern Gulf Islands Tourism Partnership Society is receiving $517,500 through the Tourism Relief Fund to expand the water taxi system connecting the five main Southern Gulf Islands, including Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, Pender, and Saturna, as well as to support 12 local Island events. The enhanced service will make it easier for tourists to visit the region year-round.
