CANADA: Canadian Passport Redesign, Virtuoso 2023 Symposium, Ottawa Wins Major Tech Conferences, and More

NATIONAL: The Canadian passport has been redesigned from cover to cover with state-of-the-art security features and new artwork. New security features include a polycarbonate data page (a technology similar to Canada's driver's licenses). Passport holders' personal information will now be laser engraved instead of printed with ink, making the data page more durable and resistant to tampering and counterfeiting. Other features include a Kinegram over the main photo, a custom see-through window with a secondary image of the passport holder, a variable laser image, and a temperature-sensitive ink feature. It also includes a new cover design with an outline of a maple leaf—the first significant change in decades.

BANFF: Held each year on the last day of the season at Banff Sunshine Village, Slush Cup is a competition where participants ski or snowboard down a run into an icy pool of water. The aim is to skim across the pool until they've reached the end. This year's Slush Cup takes place May 22, and registration is required to participate.

MONTREAL: In time for the International Day for Biological Diversity, Espace pour la vie invites eventgoers to Frédéric-Back Park, where new Celebrations of Entomophilia organized by the Insectarium will begin May 18. This time, insects are at the heart of three artworks on display throughout the summer in the park. This series of events is meant to promote insects and their essential role in keeping nature in balance.

Virtuoso 2023 Symposium will head to Montreal from May 17-21. The luxury travel conference will bring an estimated attendance of more than 350 executives from over 30 countries, including owners and managers of Virtuoso travel agency members and preferred partners.

OTTAWA: Ottawa continues to win significant technology conferences, including three Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) events between now and summer 2025. The city has secured the IEEE Sections Congress in 2023, the 2024 IEEE NSREC, and the 2025 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and CNC/URSI Radio Science Meeting. In addition to the main events, Ottawa will host many related conferences, side events, and workshops in conjunction with the upcoming conferences.
