NATIONAL: The Courage Polar Bear Dip, the country’s largest and longest-running charity event of its kind, went virtual on New Year’s Day. Rather than having participants gather in Oakville’s Coronation Park, the virtual experience included costume contests, family-friendly activities, and videos of participants doing the chilly plunge from their own homes. The Jan. 1 event marked the 26th year the event has partnered with World Vision Canada to raise funds for clean water projects in Africa.
Canada Running Series has announced its 2021 event plans. While most races will take place virtually, CRS hopes to host three in-person races next fall: Vancouver’s Under Armor Eastside 10K and Toronto’s Oasis ZooRun, both taking place Sept. 18, and the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Oct. 17. The three runs will also be offered virtually.
vFairs collaborated with the Canadian National Institute of the Blind to host an accessible virtual conference for blind and partially sighted people. The recent two-day virtual gathering, which was hosted in both English and French, used reverse contrast, enlarged fonts, chat/voice enablement, voice description features, and more.
TORONTO: The city rang in the new year with From Ontario With Love: A Celebration of Hope, a 90-minute virtual celebration broadcast on TVO and YouTube. The event featured performers including Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, and other local artists, plus a celebration of frontline workers, a fireworks show, and more.
VANCOUVER: A new virtual museum exhibition is honoring the Celebration ’90 Gay Games III & Cultural Festival, an international sports event that attracted more than 7,000 athletes to the city in 1990. The museum is available at virtualmuseum.ca and was created by VIVO Media Arts Centre.
