NATIONAL: Mytaverse is a new 3D virtual platform that was built with remote work and online meetings in mind. It offers a variety of prebuilt or fully customized 3D environments that can feature meeting rooms, conference booths, training simulations, auditoriums and more. Participants personalize their own hologram avatars that can run, jump, wave, dance and more; there can also be 3D products that the avatars can pick up and examine. Webcams on avatars can be activated, allowing for live presentations or face-to-face conversations.
CALGARY: The Ice Magic Ice Carving Competition will take place at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise from Jan. 19-30, with a bonus event at the Lake Louise Ski Resort on Jan. 20. Attendees can watch artists create complex ice sculptures in real time. Reservations are required on weekend days when there is also a free shuttle for attendees that departs from the Lake Louise Park & Ride.
TORONTO: The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will perform a tribute to jazz musician Louis Armstrong on Jan. 5 at Roy Thomson Hall; tickets start at $56. On Jan. 4, an additional performance will be available via livestream with a pay-what-you-wish model. Capacity limits for all in-person symphony concerts are currently reduced to 50% in accordance with public health regulations.
The Toronto Caribbean Carnival is slated to kick off July 20. Related events include the Grand Parade on July 30, the Caribbean International Food & Drink Festival on July 31 and an award gala on Sept. 17.
VANCOUVER: Food truck festival Street Food City X returns for its 10th year this month, with a rotating selection of trucks popping up outside the Vancouver Art Gallery from Jan. 15-23. Expected vendors for the free event include Disco Cheetah, Mamas Fish & Chips, Melt City and Shameless Buns.
