CANADA: Calgary Event Centre Project’s Cancellation, Plus a Taylor Swift Tribute Concert, New Trade Show Tech and More

NATIONAL: Trade show company Emerald has acquired MJBiz, the leading event producer in the cannabis industry that’s most known for MJBizCon, a B2B cannabis trade show that drew 1,200 exhibitors and 27,000 attendees to its October 2021 edition. MJBiz management, including CEO Chris Walsh, senior vice president of events and sales Jess Tyler and senior vice president of content and audience development Pam Moore, will continue to lead the day-to-day operations.

Floor mapping solution ExpoFP has teamed up with visitor tracking technology Crowd Connected. By combining an interactive ExpoFP floorplan with Crowd Connected’s location tracking, trade show attendees can see exactly where they are on a show floor and easily find and navigate to the exhibitors that interest them. Organizers can also get access to Crowd Connected’s full suite of foot-fall analytics tools, such as performance metrics for every exhibitor at a show.

CALGARY: The Calgary Event Centre Project, the planned future home of the Calgary Flames, has been canceled after a Dec. 31 deadline passed. In a statement, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) said that it was not prepared to fund the infrastructure and climate costs that were introduced by the city, which were reportedly adding $25.5 million to the CSEC’s project expenses. The Flames have 11 years remaining on their Scotiabank Saddledome lease.

TORONTO: Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto, located inside Casa Loma, has been named Best Italian Restaurant in the World 2022 by 50 Top Italy during a recent virtual award show. The 60-seat fine-dining restaurant was one of two restaurants to represent Canada on the list; the other was Pino Posteraro’s Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill in Vancouver.

VANCOUVER: Fever is hosting a Taylor Swift tribute concert in Vancouver on Feb. 4 at the Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church. The event will feature instrumental reinterpretations of Swift’s biggest songs in a candle-filled atmosphere. Tickets start at $30, and proof of vaccination is required.
