CANADA: Montreal’s First People’s Festival, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival, Events for Dog Moms and Wizard Fans, and More

HAMILTON, ONT.: Hamilton hosted its inaugural Tiny Home Show on the Ancaster Fairgrounds from Aug. 4-6. The event, which drew more than 2,000 visitors, featured 20 speakers presenting on topics like the climate and what it’s like to integrate into a tiny home. There were also 19 tiny homes and trailers available for attendees to explore.

MONTREAL: Montreal’s first People’s Festival runs through Aug. 18. The 32nd edition of the event celebrates Indigenous culture through screenings, dance and music performances, and more. The main festival is taking place at Places des Festivals, while screenings and other events are taking place throughout the city at venues like the Grande Biblioteque auditorium and Cinema du Musee. Highlights of the gathering include Kahnawake filmmaker Courtney Montour's documentary about Mary Two-Axe Earley, along with a performance from Inuk singer Beatrice Deer.

TORONTO: Bark & Brunch, hosted by Toronto Dog Moms, will take place at Fox & Fiddle at City Place on Sept. 10. The dog-friendly gathering includes meals for humans and pups alike; for human guests, options include avocado toast, eggs Benedict, a chipotle chicken wrap, and more, while dogs can feast on a Mo’Greens chicken or salmon breakfast. The event will also include mini sessions with animal communicator Jennifer Branagan, along with swag bags. 

VANCOUVER: The 34th edition of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival kicked off Aug. 11 and runs through Aug. 21. After being held as an online event for the last two years, the festival’s IRL return is highlighting 97 films from 20 countries, including more than 20 in-person screenings around the city. Other in-person events include two parties, including an opening gala screening on Aug. 11 that showcased the film The Empress of Vancouver. A variety of films are also available to be streamed online within 24 hours for those who bought festival tickets. 

The Wizard’s Feast will take place on Sept. 24 at the Vancouver Alpen Club. The immersive experience includes a three-course meal, entertainment from magicians and actors, and wizard-inspired activities; offerings include a family-friendly brunch or an adults-only dinner. The event’s organizers are behind similar food-focused experiences for properties like Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, and Hansel & Gretel.
