L.A. Milk Premiere Draws Small Crowd for Vigil

A small vigil formed Thursday night on Wilshire Boulevard in front of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences theater, where Focus Features and Groundswell Productions screened the new Harvey Milk biopic Milk. The film concerns San Francisco's gay rights movement in the 1970s, and in particular that era's Proposition 6, which bears similarities to the current controversy surrounding Proposition 8. The small cluster of gatherers held white candles in front of the screening, mimicking a scene in the film.

Two weeks ago, Milk premiered in San Francisco at the Castro Theatre, with a party immediately following at City Hall. Kathleen Deery Design handled the design for that event, which benefited the Hetrick-Martin Institute, Larkin Street Youth Services, the Point Foundation, and the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. In addition to the film's stars, Senator Barbara Boxer and Mayor Gavin Newsome were among the attendees.
