The opening party scene in this summer’s maybe over-hyped but (I think) somewhat-unfairly reviewed The Great Gatsby was the one element that nobody was stupid enough to pick on.
Baz Luhrmann had proven he had the chops to stage a raucous boite with 2001’s Moulin Rouge, which won that year’s Oscars for set and costume design. And, if you think about it, if you get those two things right, it is very hard not to have a great party. On an insider note, his Academy Awards after-party at the Chateau Marmont was pretty darn fabulous, too. And in those days, I was an Oscar after-party connoisseur.
So I jumped (well actually slumped, since it’s taken me more than two months) when BizBash asked me to assemble my favorite scenes that depict the event world we toil in. Curtain up.
