It's easy to tell when it's a good event: It's all in the pictures. In an age where everyone attends events with smartphones in hand, it takes an expert photographer to truly make an event stand out. Nafsika Skourti's The Invisible Room
Jordanian fashion designer Nafsika Skourti took the concept of dining al fresco to a new level with her art installation-slash-temporary venue called “The Invisible Room.” The illuminated steel structure measured almost 15 feet wide, 20 feet long, and eight feet high, with a transparent table set for 14 in the center.

The Abbotsford Airshow is a three-day event that attracts local and international spectators. Most years, the show features Canada’s Snowbirds, Canadian Forces parachute teams, entries from the Canadian Museum of Flight, and demonstrations by Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornets. The event was included in BizBash's debut list of the top 100 events in Vancouver.

Netflix moved to a new location for its after-party this year, building a tented party space at 9900 Wilshire, the former site of department store Robinson's-May. Working with Best Events, the party had a vintage nightclub vibe, enhanced by a psychedelic, neon-lined photo booth.

Fall 2019 Dior Show
For her Fall 2019 Dior show, produced by Bureau Betak and held February 26 at the Musée Rodin in Paris, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri enlisted Italian conceptual artist Bianca Pucciarelli Menna—better known by her pseudonym, Tomaso Binga—to design the show set. In a continuation of the girl power set that has come to be the standard at Dior, the venue walls were adorned with naked images of Binga contorted into every letter of the alphabet.

Toronto Light Festival
The third annual Toronto Light Festival kicked off January 18 in the city's Distillery Historic District. Enunciation, a sculpture by U.S.-based mixed-media artist Taylor Dean Harrison, was made with stainless steel, LEDs, and acrylic. The exterior mirrored its surroundings with the metal’s reflective quality, while the interior displayed color palettes inspired by nature.

Michelob Ultra Pure Gold’s Pure Golden Hour
At SXSW, the beer brand led a sunset meditation with more than 2,000 guests with mass meditation company the Big Quiet, produced with Mosaic. The meditation incorporated musical performances by Miguel, Bishop Briggs, and Cautious Clay.

SCADstory, a 360-degree, immersive experience that opened April 26, explores the school’s history, starting with its founding by an elementary school teacher from Atlanta. Several SCAD alumni contributed to the design and production of SCADstory along with the experience designers at BRC Imagination Arts.

HBO Stay Home to the Movies
HBO’s second Stay Home to the Movies event took place in July at Domino Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The 7,250-square-foot pop-up neighborhood consisted of four tiny houses and a communal backyard area.

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal
The festival celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, with TD returning at the official sponsor and crowds returning to the usual size of more than 1.5 million after last year’s attendance-dampening heat wave. The event was included on our list of the top 100 events in Canada.

‘Game of Thrones’ Fountains of Bellagio Show
Ahead of the show's final season, HBO collaborated with MGM Resorts and Wet Design to produce a show featuring pyrotechnics, music, and video projections on the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The show was set to a custom score by series composer Ramin Djawadi, and featured projections including the silhouette of a dragon.

Samsung's 10th Unpacked Event
The electronics brand used a massive, arched presentation stage and an eight-part experience to announce new products during its annual event. Branded content was projected on two arches as well as a separate LED screen that served as the stage backdrop and changed throughout the event. The structure’s entire display surface consisted of 54,414,920 pixels.

Saks 95th Birthday Carousel
To celebrate its 95th birthday, Saks created a pop-up, luxury carousel at New York’s Rockefeller Center from September 6 to 10. The carousel, which was produced by Endeavor Global Marketing, featured props and imagery inspired by the brand and New York.

Robin Hood Benefit
At the Robin Hood benefit in May, the math-inspired theme was "Robin Hood to the Power of You." The playful design from David Stark Design & Production used fabricated objects like protractors as decor, while movement artists, under the direction of choreographer Sarah O'Gleby, worked with one another to create shapes, a process that Stark described as "a poetic way of using the body."

The Pasadena Playhouse celebrated its centennial with a bold, unconventional gala featuring immersive projection mapping and a surprise escrow announcement—all while shattering fundraising records.
While officially buying the building before the gala was always the goal, event planner Sam Palmer was careful to ensure the gathering would be successful even if the timing didn’t work out. “We had a million different plans, because quite frankly, a million details needed to go right for that to happen,' he said. 'Our leadership and board worked very, very hard to get us across the finish line, and it was a beautiful moment.”
